What you will learn

  • Locate five major African heritage sites on a map
  • Give one documented example from each site
  • Explain how archaeology, inscriptions and oral tradition each contribute to what we know

From the stone city of Great Zimbabwe to the libraries of Timbuktu, five places show how African societies built, traded, worshipped and taught long before the colonial period. Each lesson takes about ten minutes, ends with a short check and a question to reflect on, and links to its sources.

What you will be able to do: place each site on a map, give one example of what it shows, and explain why historians use it as evidence.
