Evidence type: Oral tradition
Ifa is the divination system of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, also followed in diaspora communities across the Americas and the Caribbean. Its literary corpus is divided into 256 odu, each subdivided into verses (ese), which the babalawo, the Ifa priest, uses to interpret the signs: a vast body of oral literature passed on by its practitioners.
UNESCO inscribed the Ifa divination system on the Representative List in 2008. Its film is at the top of this page.
