Evidence type: Oral tradition
Gelede is a night-time ceremony of carved masks, dance and chants sung in Yoruba, performed by the Yoruba-Nago community of Benin, Nigeria and Togo. It honours the primordial mother Iyà Nlà and the place of women in society.
UNESCO inscribed the oral heritage of Gelede on the Representative List in 2008. Its film is at the top of this page.
